Love Vs. Lust

Romeo and Juliet makes it difficult to differentiate between love and lust. Especially when they seem to fall in love immediately when they lay eyes on each other. It makes you wonder whether it was actually love, or if it was just lust.

Scientists have actually found a difference between love and lust, and there is one brain structure that contribute to both. The striatum responds to pleasure, while the part of the striatum responsible for love. Basically, love happens when sexual desires are fulfilled.

What this means for Romeo and Juliet is, that what they were feeling was not love, but it was lust that was later fulfilled and blossomed into love.

Romeo and Juliet and the Idea of Love at First Sight

The ideas and culture displayed in Romeo and Juliet is very different from that of today, and a very major element of that is the idea of love at first sight, as demonstrated by our star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who fall in love as soon as they lay eyes on each other.

Love at first sight is an interesting concept. I am of the opinion that it doesn’t really exist, which, unsurprisingly, lots of other people believe. Florian Zsok conducted an experiment to mimic online dating. Of the 396 total volunteers, only 32 reported experiencing love at first sight, and those who did did not match well.

This is pretty good evidence that love at first sight is not actually a real thing, however much you want to believe it. If you want to fall in love, you’re going to have to do it the old fashioned way. No shortcuts, pal.

Music

A good way to get to know someone at first is to know their music taste. What kind of genre they like, what bands they like, and what their favorite songs are. Music is a big part of my life and always has been. Below are a list of my favorite genres, bands/artists, and songs:

Genres

Classic rock- easily my favorite genre of music, I have always prefered 60s-80s rock. Usually more instrumental and intuitive than more modern music.

Blues- second favorite genre. Easily recognizable, unique, and packed full of musical theory.

Folk– I haven’t really listened to much folk, mostly just a few songs from my favorite band of all time (you’ll see soon), but what I have heard of it, it’s super unique and different from what most bands do, and is very interesting.

Bands

Led Zeppelin– My favorite band by far, their blues-infused rock has such a natural sound that it sounds like you’re in the same room as the band. I think my favorite thing about this band is that their music does not sound produced at all, it sounds like you’re just tuning in to a jam session between a few friends. All of the members work spectacularly together. Most notably, John Bonham, the drummer, took to a different style than most drummers: instead of backing the band along with the bassist, John Bonham played much of the rhythms the the guitarist, Jimmy Page, played, or vocals that the singer, Robert Plant, sang. This gave a lot of their songs a more melodic feeling, making for much more interesting and memorable songs. The band dabbled in many different genres of music, such as blues and folk in their fourth album, and even a bit of funk in the album, “Houses of the Holy.” This ultra creative and influential band is one of the greatest that has ever existed.

Guns N’ Roses– This band is perhaps even more widely regarded than Led Zeppelin. While their hard rock style of music is not entirely unique and had definitely been done before, Guns N’ Roses arguably did it the best. They have tons of hit songs that almost anyone can recognize. Whenever you hear their songs, you can’t help but to tap your feet and hum. Their style isn’t for everyone, but it definitely is for me, as this is one of my favorite bands.

My Experience With Music

I started taking guitar lessons when I was about eight or nine. I don’t know why I was interested in learning an instrument, maybe I thought I’d be cooler, or maybe I thought it would be fun. It turned out much bigger in my life than I could’ve expected, having now been continuing lessons for about six years. It’s insanely fun, though challenging at times. It’s taken such a priority in my life that I’m actually interested in making a career out of it. It’s my favorite hobby, and it wouldn’t really be work if I loved it that much. Maybe a year or two after I started guitar lessons, I joined percussion in the school band and really enjoyed it. I’ve been doing it every year since, and this year, as a Freshman in high school, I actually played snare in my school marching band. That meant I beat lots of other older high schoolers that tried out, which really boosted my confidence in music. My interest in music has led to many opportunities for me, like marching band, and jazz band, which I play guitar in. If you’re looking for a fun hobby, learning an instrument is great for that, and can lead to many opportunities. That being said, I really suggest guitar and piano, both are fun, and piano can help with learning other instruments.
